Schedule for 1812 Event This Saturday, June 16th

War of 1812 Militia Muster

Sycamore Shoals State Historic Area

Saturday, June 16, 2012       10am – 4pm

June 18, 2012 marks the beginning of the bicentennial of the War of 1812. Tennessee played a vital role in the war, and it was during that time that Tennessee earned the nickname of the “Volunteer State”. On Saturday, June 16th Sycamore Shoals State Historic Area in Elizabethton, TN will be the site of a recreated 1812 Militia Muster as we remember the 200th anniversary of America’s forgotten war. Militia musters were a time for local citizens to gather for military drill and training should they be called up for defensive service.

Members of the Washington County Regiment of North Carolina Militia, the Park’s host living history organization, will be on hand throughout the day giving demonstrations of early 19th century life. The Washington Co. Militia normally showcases Revolutionary War history, but with the advent of the War of 1812 bicentennial the group is expanding their historic interpretation to include the “1st Regiment of East Tennessee Militia” in an effort to share this almost forgotten yet very important part of American history.
This first 1812 muster at Sycamore Shoals will give visitors the opportunity to learn about the role Tennessee played in the War of 1812. Come see the men drill and train for military action. Witness flintlock musket and rifle demonstrations. Listen as the Declaration of War is presented in a public reading. Learn how clothing styles changed from the late 1700’s to the early 1800’s, and how they stayed the same. Bring the entire family out for a fun and educational experience. Sycamore Shoals State Historic Area is located at 1651 W. Elk Ave. Elizabethton, TN 37643. For more information call 423-543-5808 or visit sycamoreshoalstn.org.
