The Daniel Boone Wilderness Trail Association

Has developed an awesome interactive website to preserve and promote historically significant sites along the Daniel Boone Wilderness Trail corridor from Long Island of the Holston to Cumberland Gap by creating historically accurate interpretative, educational and recreational opportunities.  For those of you traveling to Martin Station next weekend, use this site to point out key historical sites leading from our area along highway 58.  Notice Sycamore Shoals and other historical sites have also been included.  Enjoy !!

THE HISTORY OF CARTER COUNTY

This blog is the history of the Washington County Regiment but who where the people of the Watauga Valley; where did they come from?

Sherry Shook ,who finds the neatest things ever, sent me an interesting link to share with you. It’s about the people who settled this area, who they were and where they lived. She pointed out that there was one typo. The name “Joseph Ryder” should be JOSEPH HYDER. It’s a great article, easy reading and familiar names, Tipton, Carter, Boyd, Taylor and more are still reflected in our friends.

CAMP FOLLOWERS

Everybody knows what militia men do but what is the role of the camp follower? Another one of Sherry’s great links.

TENNESSEE FRONTIER: THREE REGIONS

THE FORGOTTEN WAR

Sherry saw a PBS show that deals with the French and Indian War , tracing it through the northern regions where it occurred. I checked the links and they are wonderful. Reading them was well worth the time for those who want to experience the places  where some of the most monumental struggles occurred.

HORATIO HORNBLOWER SERIES ON U TUBE

Based on the novels by C.S. Forester, A&E’s Horatio Hornblower was a made-for-TV series that ran from 1998-2003. The eight individual films that make up this Collector’s Edition chronicle the unlikely rise of young Horatio from lowly midshipman to powerful commander, during the early years of the Napoleonic Wars. The stories are engaging and entertaining, the production grand and lavish, and the overall result brilliant.

  3. Hey Sherry,
I’m a regular follower of your website, and love it! Don’t forget to mention the books I wrote about Bonny Kate Sherrill and her years after the rescue at Watauga Fort. It seems the information published in “Bonny Kate: Pioneer Lady” and “Bonny Kate’s Honeymoon” could really help enlighten folks about who she was and what she accomplished.

Hi Mark, Thank you for writing and I’m glad you enjoy the blog. My name is Ramona and as the militia’s historian, I’m the author of all of the blogs except Sherry’s links. could you tell me more abut your books? Are they historical fictions or histories?

Thanks again for following the website. Will you be coming to Sycamore Shoals Historical site tomorrow? It’s the anniversary event of the May Seige. Love to meet you.

    Hi There,
My family and I are relocating to Murfreesboro, TN this May. One of the hardest things about this move is that my children will have to give up the Fife and Drum corp of Yorktown, VA. Currently, we have a fifer and two drummers who are on the cusp of making it to senior corp, and are devastated about giving it up. Since you are the only Fife and Drum corp of TN, we are very disappointed that you are too far from Murfreesboro to join. However, what is the possibility of starting a F&D corp in Middle TN? Is there any need? How can we get started with a project like this? Would your foundation help get one started? We would love any information that could point us in the right direction. Thank you, Heidi

Hello Heidi, thank you for your comment. You may want to check with a Rev War reenactment group in the Nashville area. Fort Manskers comes to mind. Ask them if there is any group tgere that plays Colonial Era music like that. You also might want to get in touch with your local high school band director and ask him or her. Our group is a bunch of students and musicians who get together and play every Saturday. It may be that you may start something like that with the help of one of the colleges or high schools like that.
