Special Events and Workshops

 

 

 

Watauga Valley Fife & Drum Corps

Saturdays                                                                                            10:00 am – 12 pm

The Fife & Drum Corps performs at historical events, dedications, and parades.  This group is open to anyone ages 13 & up.  Musical experience is welcome but not necessary; just come with a willingness to learn.  Meet our volunteer coordinator John Large at the Sycamore Shoals Visitors Center.  Lessons are free of charge, just call and let us know you’re coming!

 

Winter Militia Muster at Fort Watauga

Saturday, February 6                                                              10:00 am – 4:00 pm

Sunday, February 7                                                                 10:00 am – 3:00 pm

Visit Fort Watauga and step into a colorful Revolutionary world.  Reenactors portray a variety of characters, from hunters and farmers to land speculators and backcountry gentry.  Walk among colonists and native people who share their past through talks, mini-dramas, and demonstrations of 18th century life.

 

Raised Bed Gardening

It’s not too early to be planning & building your spring garden. Gardener extraordinaire, Ben Hunter, will be joining us to share his experiences & techniques for growing the garden of your dreams!  Sponsored by the Northeast Tennessee Master Gardeners

 

Beginning Sewing                                                                 

Instructor: Donna Horowitz

Saturday, February 6, 20, 27 and March 5                             1 pm – 4 pm

Cost:    $80.00 for all 4 classes- plus supplies                         Min:     2          Max:    6

Learn to sew an easy starter project! Class is designed for true beginners. Topics covered : pattern layout, importance of grain line / seam allowances, pattern terminology and many much more . Student will sew a bathrobe as their project . Please bring – sewing machine & manual, basic sewing supplies, fabric & pattern. Instructor will provide a supply list at the first class. Bring your machine to class #1.

 

 

Introduction to Bee Keeping

Curious about bees?  Learn about the benefits of back yard beekeeping, the critical necessity of their function of pollination, and local resources that would aid a beginning beekeeper.

 

The Liberty Spinners

This gathering of spinners and fiber artists is open to anyone interested in the art of spinning.  Join us at 9:30 am on the 2nd Tuesday of each month (April to November).

 

Watercolor Painting – Floral Still Life

Inkle Weaving                                                                       Instructor: Ronnie Lail

Cost:  $60 includes loom (to keep!) & all supplies                 Min: 3              Max: 8

$20 thread only

$10 instruction only

Learn how to weave wide sashes, narrow bands, and shoelaces on a loom that is light-weight and easy to carry around! You can create wonderful patterns through varied placement of colorful thread.  Bring scissors.

 

Watauga Valley Art League Meeting and Program

Everyone is welcome to join the Watauga Valley Art League for their monthly meetings that feature a guest speakers and fellowship with area artists. This month’s meeting will feature Mary Nees who will be sharing her experiences teaching art to students in China.   WVAL meets the 2nd Sunday of each month, except October

Old Time Music Jam – Led by Art Lang

Sunday, February 28                                                   1:30 pm – 4:00 pm

Enjoy the rich musical traditions of our region each month.  Old time musicians of all levels are welcome.  Don’t play and instrument?  Come on over, kick back, and enjoy the tunes!
